Skydiving & Popular Aircraft

Whether you've considered skydiving in the past, or you're suddenly struck with curiosity about flying, there's no better time to learn. Parachuting is defined as the process of skydiving out of an airplane and coasting slightly to the earth. Skydiving allows you to feel like you're soaring, without the feeling of insecurity above the ground. After a parachute is released, it slows the process of descent providing you with a great opportunity to enjoy the remarkable view thousands of feet high!

If it's your first time you will be harnessed in with a Tandem Master! Your safe, graceful landing will be provided by this expert instructor who will fasten your parachute prior to take off and advise you when to deploy it during freefall. This instructor will jump with you, free fall with you and land with you. You can feel safe knowing that your life is in the hands of a FAA certified instructor with hundreds (if not thousands) of successful skydives under his belt.

Curious about what height will the jump occur?

The airplane has to get to an elevation of 10,000 to 14,000 feet before you can exit. That means, you will be diving from almost 3 miles over the ground! This height cap exists for your protection, any higher and you would need an oxygen mask to jump!

You'll be trained on how each of your parachutes are controlled before you leave the ground.

If your primary parachute gives you difficulty, you have a second. This reserve chute is immediately activated and launched should you and your instructor hit a low elevation without the primary parachute functioning. At some locations, a "static line jump" may be used for parachute deployment training. During this activity, you jump from the plane with a safe and secure tether to the aircraft.

Aircraft Commonly Used In Skydiving

"Light sport aircraft" are the most heavily used during skydiving. These planes can transport a range of skydivers from as few as 4 to as many as 28. However, most of these planes are made and designed exclusively for skydiving as they climb faster than typical aircraft allowing divers to jump up to 4 times in one hour!

Depending on the power of the engine, it could take as little as 10 or 20 minutes to climb to diving height. Unsurprisingly, the size of the engine determines how quickly it gets up to this point. The speedier planes, like the King Airs with PT6A-20 engines, are regarded as the fastest in the world in their ascent.

These aircraft can hold up to 15 people, in addition to their speedy climb to optimal height. {The King Airs, however, are only the second most popular aircraft used for diving.} The most prominent twin and single engine planes for skydivers are the Havilland Canada DHC-6-Twin Otter, and the Pacific Aerospace PAC P-750 XSTOL, respectively. Whether piston or turbine powered, typically used planes for skydiving tend to have wide, large doors. Turbine and piston-powered planes are separated by a key difference: turbine planes are lightweight and use their fuel more efficiently. While they supply a similar horsepower as a typical piston engine, crafts with turbine engines are typically more expensive.
